Exhibitions Autumn 2018

JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT AND EGON SCHIELE
From October 11th 2017 to March 5th 2019
Fondation Louis Vuitton

From opposite ends of the 20th century, from Europe – Vienna – to America – New York, the lives and works of Egon Schiele and Jean-Michel Basquiat are fascinating for their fleetingness and their intensity.

Egon Schiele’s (1890-1918) work is indissociable from the Viennese spirit of the early 20th century. In just a few years, his drawing emerged as one of the peaks of expressionism. At odds with the Academy, which he entered precociously, he founded the Neukunstgruppe in 1909 and, thanks to Gustav Klimt, discovered the work of Van Gogh, Munch and Toorop.

The work of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988), one of the most significant painters of the 20th century, is spread over four levels of Frank Gehry’s building. The exhibition covers the painter’s whole career, from 1980 to 1988, focusing on 120 defining works.

RON AMIR - SOMWHERE IN THE DESERT
From September 14 to December 2nd

Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris

Already shown at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in 2016, the exhibition – 30 large-format colour photographs and 6 videos – looks at the living conditions of Sudanese and Eritrean refugees in the Holot detention centre in the Negev Desert, which has since been shut down.

Dating from 2014–2016, Ron Amir's photographs document the refugees' daytime activities, showing how, in the desert and with no resources, they set about shaping a shared everyday existence. Using sticks, sand, stones and all kinds of abandoned bits and pieces, they managed to to put together community huts, tearooms, sporting facilities, improvised ovens and other additions to the spartan facilities provided at Holot.

We don't actually see the refugees in the photographs: instead Amir conveys indirectly but clearly their sensitivity, creativity, and instinct for survival.

MAGNIFICIENT VENICE: VENICE EUROPE AND THE ARTS IN THE 18TH CENTURY
From September 26th to January 21st
Grand Palais

Having inherited a multisecular tradition, at the dawn of the 18th century Venetian civilisation dazzled in the visual and decorative arts, music and opera alike. The presence of great talents, such as the painters Piazzetta and Giambattista Tiepolo, the urban landscape painter or vedutista Canaletto and the sculptors Corradini and Brustolon, to name but a few, allowed Venice to cultivate a unique aesthetic and sense of luxury. Music was kept very much alive through creations by composers such as Porpora, Hasse and Vivaldi, performed by world-famous singers, including the castrato Farinelli and the soprano Faustina Bordoni.
In the Ospedali, poor or orphaned young girls received extensive musical education, and their virtuosity made them famous throughout Europe. In the city, during Carnival, drama and farce were everywhere, and the passion for gambling was given free reign at the ridotto.

MIRO
From October 3rd to February 4th
Grand Palais

Bringing together nearly 150 works, this retrospective traces the technical and stylistic evolution of the artist. Miró creates from his dreams and opens the door to his poetic universe.

Miró transformed the world around him with an apparent simplicity of means, whether a symbol, the tracing of a finger or water on paper, a seemingly fragile line on the canvas, a line in the ground fused with fire, or an insignificant object paired with another. He conjured a world full of poetic transformations from these surprising juxtapositions and unusual marriages, restoring enchantment to the world.

JAKUCHU THE COLORFUL REALM OF LIVING BEINGS
From September 15th to October 14th
Petit Palais

A singular figure of the Edo period (1603-1867), Jakuchū (1716-1800) is known as one of the eccentric or independent artists of Kyoto, who were not tied to any artistic movement in particular but who created a totally personal style. This set of thirty rolls entitled Images of the Colorful Realm of Living Beings (Dōshoku sai-e) is his most ambitious work, created over nearly a decade. With its flowers, fish and birds, it represents one of the most remarkable examples of Japanese polychrome painting in the eighteenth century. This set, which belongs to the Imperial Agency of Japan and is in every way exceptional, has only left Japan once before, in April 2012. It is being shown only in Paris, accompanied by the Buddhist triad of the Shōkoku-ji temple, and for just one month because of its fragility.
