What's on in January in our wonderful museums in Paris

First of all, we wanted to wish you all the best for 2014!  It has been a busy end of the year, so forgive us for the lack of activity on our blog. If you are coming in Paris in January, note that you will only have a couple of days left to see some of the major exhibitions that started this autumn. Below is a list of what is still on and the dates it closes. SOPHIE CALLE at Galerie Perrotin until January 11th Sophie Calle presents two series ‘What Do You See?’ and ‘Purloined’ as well as the piece Le Major Davel. Closed Sun, Mon www.perrotin.com DIEGO RIVERA & FRIDA KAHLO at the Musée de l'Orangerie until January 13th This exhibition devoted to the legendary Mexican artist duo, Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo is a collaboration with the Museo Dolores Olmedo in Mexico and presents masterpieces by Kahlo (not shown in France over 15 years).  The exhibition presents the couple’s art side by side Musée de l’Orangerie Jardin des Tuileries 1st. Open daily, 9am–6pm 10€/ 7.50€. www.musee-orangerie.fr FELIX VALLOTTON at the Grand Palais until January 20th Felix VallottonFélix Vallotton came to Paris in 1882 to study at the progressive art school Academie Julian, home of many Post-Impressionist artists. He became well known for his woodcuts, but after 1899, he switched to painting. He worked assiduously, in all genres: portraits, nudes, landscapes, still lifes and even history painting. "His modern style is easily recognisable by its slim paint layer, refined colours, precise outlines, bold framings, and flattened perspectives borrowed from Japanese prints and photography." Grand Palais Clemenceau entrance, Avenue Winston Churchill, 8th Everyday except Tuesdays 10am-8pm (10pm Wed). 11€ / 8€ www.grandpalais.fr/ "DESIRS ET VOLUPTE - VICTORIAN MASTERPIECES” at Musée Jacquemart-André until January 20th The exhibition shows about 50 paintings from artists famous in England during the reign of Queen Victoria in the 19th century. The paintings reflect the common desire of the artists of this period to pay homage to the “cult of beauty”. The exhibition is divided in 8 themes: antiquity revisited, classical beauty, muses and models, femme fatal, romantic heroines, ideal harmony, the delights of the nude, and the cult of beauty. Musée Jacquemart-André 158, boulevard Haussmann 75008 Paris Open every day 10am to 6pm Late opening Monday and Saturdays until 8:30pm http://www.musee-jacquemart-andre.com YOUSUF KARSH at the Mona Bismarck Foundation until January 26th This exhibition at the Mona Bismarck Foundation brings together approximately seventy of the photographer’s most striking portraits of French and American dignitaries and luminaries. Original photographs will be presented alongside archival material from the dozens of Life and Paris-Match covers that Karsh captured. Mona Bismarck foundation 34 Avenue de New York, 75116 Paris Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00am to 6:00pm http://monabismarck.org/ AZZEDINE ALAIA at the Musée Galliera until January 26th Don’t miss this expo that everyone has been raving about in the newly renovated museum Galliera. Alaia’s figure hugging dresses have been highly sought after since the 80s. Over seventy pieces of the iconic designer’s creations are presented in the galleries and the beautiful Matisse room. It is the first retrospective devoted to him with over 200 works from the late 1910s to the 1960s. Musée du Jeu de Paume 1 place de la Concorde, 75008 Paris Tuesday: 11am – 9pm Wednesday – Sunday 7pm Closed Mondays http://www.jeudepaume.org THE RENAISSANCE AND DREAM - WORKS FROM EL GRECO, BOSCH, VERONESE at the Musée du Luxembourg until January 26th The exhibition gives us an insight into the golden age of the representation of dreams with around eighty works by celebrated Renaissance artists, such as Hieronymus Bosch, Veronese, Dürer and Correggio. Taking us, from the moment of sleep to the moment of wakening, through dreams and nightmarish visions, and invites us to give free rein to our imagination, to lose ourselves in the disturbing images of dreams. Musée du Luxembourg 19, rue de Vaugirard 75005 Paris Open every day 10am to 7:30pm Late opening Monday and Fridays until 10pm http://www.museeduluxembourg.com/ "RAYMOND DEPARDON: UNE MOMENT SI DOUX" at the Grand Palais until February 10th The Grand Palais has put together an exhibition of more than 150 photos, of which half are previously unseen, and which oversee the career of the founder of the Gamma agency from the end of the 1950s until today. The exhibition ends with ‘Un moment si doux’ (‘Such a gentle moment’), a series begun during the first decade of this century, which takes a step back from reportage for a more intimate approach to subjects in Africa and South America. To celebrate this anniversary, six hundred Cartier jewels, watches and precious little objects are gathered under the grandiose the Grand Palais. The jewels are, of course, exceptional. Whether personal commissions for early 20th century Maharajas or avant-garde creations dreamed up by house creative director Jeanne Toussaint, known affectionately as 'the Panthere', the sheer scale of pieces on show here serves to weave a shimmering path through changing tastes and eras. Grand Palais Every day except Tuesdays from 10am to 8pm Late opening Wednesdays 10pm www.grandpalais.fr/ “SERGE POLIAKOFF: LE REVE DES FORMES” at the MAM Musée moderne de la Ville de Paris until February 23rd The first large scale exhibition of the abstract painter Serge Poliakoff (1906-1969) since 1970: in all, some 150 works from the period 1946-1969 will be shown. He was one of the most important members of the Ecole de Paris. The exhibition is backed up by documentary material (photographs, visual and sound archives) providing an insight into the Russian born French painter’s life.
